Creating a sense of belonging in business is a joke. I said it. It is not an area that we focus on. My team and I look at this and are like, please. I belong to the black community. I belong to the Christian faith. I belong to the Nelson clan. Belonging is such a deep and intimate word. It has no place in the business world.
Again, from TaChelle Lawson's perspective, you do whatever you want to. I do, however, encourage you to focus on inclusion because that is an attainable goal.
Inclusion is what we're really, truly after. Who even added the B to DEIB? I mean, we're still trying to figure out the E, let alone adding another, anyway, I digress. The B in DEIB should be business and business only. Belonging has no place there.
But before you even attempt to focus on another letter, let's master the I. We are a long way from mastering the I. We are a long way from creating true inclusion. Now, if belonging is something that really, really matters to you, great.
I want to talk to you about your inclusion first. And then you can tell me what you've done to create belonging, because it is impossible to create belonging without inclusion.
